Google DNS & SEO

Why Google DNS isn’t the best choice for SEO

First of all you need to know what’s the function of a DNS (Domain Name Server).

When you fire up your browser and type in an URL the DNS translates this domain name into an IP address. The link you see in the browser is only a mask for the IP address which is beyond this domain name. Without a DNS we would have to know every single IP for all required domains.

The biggest search engine on the internet offers very fast and free to use Google DNS Servers found at

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

and a lot of people already use those servers for a faster browsing experience on the web. Like mentioned above this service is - like many other Google Services - free of charge.

If you are using the one or another SEO suites you’ll generate a lot of requests across google’s DNS servers. Now imagine that all request are sent to Google’s DNS Servers before you’ll get back any content.

I started a blog post at Free Fast DNS Site with the subject “Google DNS bad for SEO” but this post has been deleted.

So I’ll explain why it’s a very bad idea to use Google DNS with SEO suites.

An important SEO technique is scraping search engines, although Google dislikes this kind of requests as forbidden. Any SEO suite makes use of scraping for gathering precise, actual ranking results, effective keywords, KEI stats, harvesting backlinks and some other info. The most important difference of small business SEO suites compared to Sistrix, XOVI, AHREF, SearchMetrics, Majestic SEO Suite or SEM rush is the budget. The big suites gain data off the Google API, BOSS API, or some other paid services while the small business SEO suites use these scraping techniques for free.

Money is one reason Google is trying to deadlock search engine scraping. If you ever saw a capture in google “You sent to many requests to our search engine” then you got caught in the act.

But the small suites use clever techniques to circumvent the google blocks, and one of them is simulating human behaviour.

Now it’s clear how it helps google to determine if there are scraping requests from a specific IP. Even if the SEO suites use proxies to deliver the content back to port 80 of your browser the request will be sent via DNS on port 53. Google has the chance to analyse the server requests from your IP and this can cause

  • bad / untrue scraping results
  • slow response
  • Google is watching your online moves
  • ranking goal gets uncovered

  • I made some experiments with virtual machines as I noticed very bad scraping results and guess:

    Using alternative DNS Servers like OpenDNS got me better results within my SEO suites. So I could definetely verify Google DNS is bad for SEO.

    Hope I could help, have a nice day!

    This is a great response and it is very true about SEO and why content is king.

    I was emailed recently by someone asking how my site does so well in Google. They probably noticed that I don’t use meta-tags, I sometimes forget to put alt text on images and I’m not jamming every page with keywords. If you study up on SEO tactics you’ll see that I ignore most of them. Here is…

    Some moments deserve more than one angle. That’s why we’re ecstatic to give Photosets a huge upgrade today, giving you new levels of control to tell your stories the way you want to.

    1) Photoset photos now open in all their high-res glory on the Dashboard and on your blog.

    2) You can now pick a layout for your photos to tell the right story.

    3) Tumblr Themes can now make Photosets look and work any way you please with a host of new theme variables:

    {block:Photoset}
        <!-- Number of photos -->
        {PhotoCount}

        <!-- Integer representation of the layout -->
        {PhotosetLayout}

        <!-- JS array of the Photoset column counts -->
        {JSPhotosetLayout}

        <!-- Each of the Photoset photos -->
        {block:Photos}
            {PhotoURL-500}

            {block:HighRes}
                {PhotoURL-HighRes}
            {/block:HighRes}

            {Caption}

            {block:Exif} ... {/block:Exif}
        {/block:Photos}
    {/block:Photoset}

    Enjoy!
